Results

The authors devised a palatable diet that is 90% free of inositol and administered it to 15 patients with bipolar disorder. Six patients had rapid cycling bipolar disorder with incomplete response to lithium or valproate, 2 patients had incomplete response to lithium as outpatients, and 7 patients had incomplete response to lithium as inpatients. For mania or hypomania there were seven responders, 1 non-responder and 3 drop-outs. For depressive symptoms there were 3 responders and 1 non-responder.
