Results

This was a study of artimisinin, an OTC Chinese herb from which antimalarial compounds are derived, as an adjunct for schizophrenia. Sixty-five (65) patients were randomized to artimisinin or placebo for 10 weeks, with a 2-week run-in. There was no difference in PANSS total between the groups overall. However, for patients who had antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii, against which artimisinin is thought to be moderately effective, the patients on artimisinin (n=8) improved significantly more than the patients on placebo (n=14) by ANOVA (F=2.89, p=0.0145).
