Results
One hundred thirty nine children and adolescents with bipolar disorder received lithium and divalproex in combination for 20 weeks in an open-label design. Combination treatment resulted in significant improvements in ratings of both mania and depression. Of the 139 enrolled in the open trial, 60 patients who experienced symptomatic remission were randomized to receive either lithium or divlaproex monotherapy for 23 weeks. There was no difference in time to relapse between the two drugs.
