Results

Fourteen patients with mania were randomized to receive a tryptophan free drink or placebo as an adjunct to valproic acid treatment. Seven of eight patients who received the tryptophan depleting drink achieved a 35% reduction of the Young Mania Rating Scale score, whereas only one of six patients receiving placebo responded at this level.
