Outcome Measurements

Results

Fifty nine patients with major depression were randomized to receive: 1) left (n=12) or right (n=12) 3Hz rTMS with placebo medication; 2) left (n=10) or right (n=9) 10 Hz rTMS with placebo medication or 3) chlomipramine with sham rTMS (n=16). rTMS was administered to the prefrontal cortex daily for two weeks. There was no significant difference between groups with regard to Hamilton Depression Scores. There was a significantly higher proportion (55%) of treatment responders (reduction of Hamilton score by 50% or more) in the left 3Hz rTMS group. This treatment modality was also better tolerated and was associated with fewer dropouts.
